AIR SPAN II Q&A: TOM RÖMER AKA TOMMY TRIGGAH

In line with the upcoming Air Span II re-release we had a little chat with some OG sneakerheads, starting off with Tom Römer aka Tommy Triggah.

Who are you, and where are you from?
I'm Tommy Triggah, Dutch Street Culturist, Sneakernut & Hiphop head since the late 80's. I hail from all over the East Netherlands.

What keeps you occupied on a daily basis?
I own a Copy Write & PR business (holla at me).

What was your first memory of seeing the Air Span?
I remember seeing it first on a Nike flyer at my local Sporting Goods store, where I copped most of my OG Nike's back in the day. The owner didn't stock the Air Span at first, because the OG Air Structure, the OG Air 180, the Challenge Court Line as well as the OG Air Max 90 took most of the shine at that time. Only after me and some friends asked him about the Span, he started to order pairs. Then and there a classic was born and the rest is history. On a funny side note, there's actually an elderly lady at my gym, who still work's out in a crisp pair of pink OG Air Span 2's from 91'. I really got to stop lurking at her Span's, before she starts to notice and gives me that creep look.

The Air Span released in 1989, shortly followed by the Air Span II in 1990 & 1991. How do you think this shoe differentiated from an Airmax 1, '90 or Epic?

I just love that big Air Span 2 logo on the side, it changes the look, of what in essence is a very simple silhouette. Like it's saying; Yo, I'm here! I remember the Air Max 90 being a much more street kinda kick, while the Air Span 2 was worn by both street cats and also by "normal folk". The retail price was also lower than the Air Max 90, so it was (and still is) a win win situation with the Span. Stylin' on the low!

Did this shoe represent the style of that particular time?
It sure did and it actually still does. Because the releases from the late 80's and the early 90's are still amongst, if not the, favorites of every sneaker loving heart. Even for those who haven't experienced the OG days of the Air Span 2, that's how timeless the silhouette is. Keep those retroes coming Nike.
