PATTA Q&A: SLOWTHAI

Leading up to his upcoming performance at the BBQ X All Gone Special in Bitterzoet, Amsterdam we had a little chat with slowthai about who he is and what keeps him busy.

Who are you, and where are you from?
My name's slowthai - no space, no caps. I'm from Northampton, England also known as NN, a reference to the postal code.

What keeps you occupied on a daily basis?
Music and the people around me. Most of my friends aim high, all with goals to achieve. That's one source of inspiration for me.

How did you get into creating music?
I had a variety of music around me as a kid: My Mum would listen to Jungle/Garage, my Dad would listen to a lot of Reggae and Indie, my uncles were listening to Hip-Hop/Rap and then the kids I was hanging out with on the estate were listening to Grime and UK Hip-Hop. When I was 10, I was learning to play the piano. I didn't stick to it, but I think that's where I found a love for Jazz.

(Laughs) I remember this one time where my Dad was making some dead beat on Garage Band. Me and my brother were rapping but my Dad was rating my brothers bars more than mine... from that day on, I was like "fuck it, I'll prove I'm better at this music ting" and this is where we are today. My brother doesn't rap no more (Laughs).

What can we expect from slowthai?
Greatness, Ugliness, Realness and Weirdness. I'm here to create art with substance, with a real life perspective - not an ego driven one.

What is your favourite visual at the moment and why? (art, photography, videos)
NN is home to some of my favourite photographers/artists. Tyrone Williams (Insta: @tyswills), Dante Belt (Insta: @dantebelt) and Callum Ward (Insta: @c0zycal).

Yung Nnelg's video for 'Forrest Gump' is hard. Other than that, I can't think of anything else that stands out as of recent.

Which music artists are you currently listening to and would you recommend to others?
Oscar #Worldpeace, Lauren Auder, Fredwave, Izzie Gibbs, Debe, Blue Daisy, Jeshi, Daniel Duke, Wiki, Triple Six Mafia, Xxxtentacion, Oasis, Nirvana and Nina Simone (my favourite).

I recommend any of the above, but there's bare other people making waves in the scene right now. I try my best to keep my distance from other people's music so that I'm not subconsciously influenced.

What is your favourite travel destination?
Couldn't really say as I haven't travelled too much yet. Been to Amsterdam a bunch of time, Spain and Thailand (no pun)... once I travel the globe, I'll get back to you.
