In collaboration with Bassline, BBQ & Appelsap, Beat Bop we present an exclusive Amsterdam screening of Stretch & Bobbito: Radio Show That Changed Lives at Cafe de Duivel.
We had a little chat With Robert “Bobbito” Garcia, a New York-born and raised DJ, writer, street ball player/coach/announcer, and member of the Rock Steady Crew. Robert Garcia, better known as Cool Bob Love, Dj Cucumber slice, or Bobbito, is one of the founders and co-hosts of the notorious Stretch & Bobbito radio show. The show was the stage for many exclusive freestyles and interviews from various (then) unsigned artists such as Big Pun, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Wu-Tang Clan, Fugees, Big L, The Notorious B.I.G and many more. Bobbito is the writer of ‘Where’d You Get Those?: New York City's Sneaker Culture 1960-1987’, where he interviewed New York celebrities about their sneaker collection and the “Project Playground” adidas Superstars and a few Air forces. Read about what else he's been up to:
Who are you and where are you from?
Bobbito Garcia, repping New York and Puerto Ricoooooooooo.
What keeps you occupied on a daily basis?
My two children: One is my physical son. The other the 2nd film I've directed: STRETCH AND BOBBITO: RADIO THAT CHANGED LIVES. Digital release October 22 directly from stretchandbobbito.com. Word.
What is is your favourite graphic at the moment and why? (art, photographs, videos)
Anything by my boy José Parlá (joseparla.com). He's a painter, illustrated the Jay-Z verse in me and Stretch's film (and killed it), and recently got into sculpture. Wildly talented. And a beautiful human being who I'm proud to call "Hermano!"
Which artists are you currently listening to and would you recommend others?
Quantic is ridiculously prolific, cranks out new album after new album, always challenging my ear and his own past catalog by reaching new heights in musicianship and composition. Mad flavor. Started out doing hip hop and electronic music, now does crazy latin rhythms infused with soul and funk. Check him out. Anything he does is dope basically.
What is your best power piece at the moment? (clothing, collectors item etc)
Shirts & Skins just blessed with me with a 1-of-1 hoodie for my Full Court 21™ tournament. I haven't taken it off since I got it eight days ago, haha :)
What is your favourite travel destination?
Puerto Ricoooooooooooooo, baby!
What was the main idea behind the documentary?
Tell the story of the most impactful hip hop radio show ever, from the personal lens of me and Stretch's story but also the narratives of the artists who we helped expose as well as the listeners worldwide we touched.
Were you aware of the impact of the show back in the days?
Not like we are now. We'd travel and saw people in Japan selling our tapes. But no way to know back then how many people listened. We're getting a gauge now ‘cuz we're selling out screenings everywhere, London, NYC, Brooklyn, Oakland, LA, and the film hasn't even come out digitally yet! Releases 10/22. stretchandbobbito.com
