Recordlabel Gqom Oh!, radio station Crudo Volta and filmmaker Tommasi Cassinis joined forces to produce an interesting documentary about Durban's gqom scene, South Africa's new generation of low-budget raw dance music. Woza Taxi (named after Durban's taxi drivers who blast the music out along their routes while shuttling passengers to parties) highlights some of the gqom scene's core artists like Dominowe and DJ Mabheko, documenting the struggle these artists face to get their music heard and respected in South Africa, despite gqom's growing international acclaim. The film also takes a look at glom's connection to drugs, specifically ecstasy, which for many powers up the club nights and bhenga dancing associated with the scene. Watch Woza Taxi below.
