W139 is a presentation and production space for contemporary art in the centre of Amsterdam. It was founded in 1979 by a group of young artists who wanted to present an alternative to the collections and exhibitions on show at the city’s museums and commercial galleries. In the course of 30 years, W139 has evolved from an anti-establishment squat into a professional non-institutional platform for contemporary art. The program includes both Dutch and international artists who are invited to develop a new (site-specific) work for the W139 area. Today, W139 operates parallel with, rather than in opposition to, the more established exhibition venues. W139 provides 'room for risk', and in so doing fulfills a unique role in the Dutch art world.
"Your Art World" is a poster art project presented by W139. Amsterdam has a great variety of small artists' initiatives, collectives and art spaces run by artists. W139, founded by artists and once an anti-establishment squat itself, put a spotlight on artists' initiatives and collectives with this project.
During one week, W139 will be an open studio/workspace. W139 invited 30 artists' initiatives to work there on 90 posters, to be hung in abri's and public advertisement-boards all over town from October 24 until October 29. The posters will present the initiatives and their worlds and art world to the outside world. During the work period, September 13 until September 29, W139 will be open for the public as usual. This way W139 will be a meeting place both for the initiatives, their public.
The posters will be presented on Saturday September 22 and will be for public viewing until September 29. Among the participants is our friend Bizar, who was commissioned by Red Light Radio to produce a special series on their behalf, definitely worth checking out. Other participants include Artists with Attitude, Berm Collectief, Fatform and many more!
