Get Familiar: BXKS
As a small, independent brand, almost all our business is based on personal relationships. We caught up with BXKS - from Luton, UK ahead of her upcoming EP Full time Daydreamer. See what she keeps her going, where she comes from and her motivations within creativity.
Where did you grow up and how has that influenced your life at all?
I grew up in Luton Town, it’s a very multi-cultural place to live the different cultures I’ve experienced from growing up in my home town has definitely influenced me to express all the things I’ve seen and experienced through my music
Please take us through your creative process.
I mostly go off the beat if the beat works for me then I can create a song. I don’t have a set creative process but the more I continue to master my craft I reckon I’ll eventually have get one.
How would you describe your personal style?
I enjoy most styles of music I'm quite open in regards to my music taste, there isn’t a particular sound I strictly listen too... I just like music
What motivates you on a daily basis?
Being alive motivates me, I’m fortunate enough to able to wake up every day and go about my day!
What is your dream goal/project?
Part of my dream is to continue to make music do brand deals, some acting, tour and hopefully make some album’s!
How did your relationship with music begin?
In my younger days, when I was about 7, I was part of the choir so I’d say from Church. Later on I got into music rapping-wise just from doing freestyles in the car with my friends, then started taking it more seriously a few years ago.
Who were your main influences growing up?
Growing up, anyone that was on Channel U! But mainly I would say Skepta. In terms of American artists I would say people like Missy Elliot and Busta Rhymes because of their music videos.
How would you best describe your musical style?
I have no idea - it’s not even a genre! I’d probably describe it as alternative-grime ‘cause I do spit on 140bpm and it does sound like grime but the beats aren’t really grime beats
Any other artists you listen to regularly?
Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Kish Fantastic, Oscar #Wordpeace. Louis Culture and obviously Skepta.
Are there any other music genres you have an appreciation for?
Yes! For sure. I really like house music and Kaytranada!
What's your day-to-day like?
I’m lazy as fuck. I really don’t do much - I stay at home and watch a lot of anime, psychological thrillers and mind-bending films. Then I go to the studio - that’s about it!
What was your style like growing up?
Very tomboy-ish I would say. Always wearing tracksuits etc.
What’s your favourite part about being an artist? Least favourite?
I would say performing, even though I’ve only performed once and it was in my bedroom. I enjoy the writing process and coming up with beats alongside the producers. Least favourite part would definitely be the business side.
What’s the biggest problem you've had to overcome so far?
Being broke - that is the biggest problem and it’s still a problem!
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
If I could change anything it would be this weird narrative that women rappers should stop rapping about sexual-related things but are totally fine with male-rappers doing it. I just think that’s really strange.
Do you have any upcoming projects? What’s next for you?
I have an upcoming project called Full Time Daydreamer and I’m hoping to release another project this year. Planning on doing lots of music and lots of shows!
