PATTA X STEDELIJK MUSEUM AMSTERDAM
From Saturday, December 12th until May 31st 2021, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will be running a special exhibition that lies close to the heart of Patta. The "Surinamese School" exhibition is a celebration of Surinamese paintings in all its diversity and depth. Presenting over 100 artworks by 35 artists, Surinamese School explores the key themes and narratives at the heart of Surinamese painting from 1910 to the mid-1980s. Depictions of Surinamese history, spirituality and everyday life, alongside forays into abstraction, and social change, gave shape to artistic developments.
In conjunction with the Surinaamse School exhibition, Patta has worked with Stedelijk Museum on a t-shirt, displaying one specific piece out of the many artworks of the Surinamese School. This piece by René Tosari exudes a strong message, referring back to Kaikoesi, Baron and Boni, freedom fighters elemental in the formation of Suriname's nation state. The shirt is worn here by Patta co-owners Edson Sabajo and Gee Schmidt, both of whom are from Surinamese descent.
The Patta x Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam t-shirt will be exclusively available at Stedelijk Museum from Saturday, December 19th.
