In line with our upcoming Deviation x Converse x Patta collaboration, we had a chat with the founders of Deviation. We asked the two pioneers in the London club scene about who they are and why we needed Deviation. Read the full article here:

BENJI B

Who are you, and where are you from?
I’m Benji from London, UK.

What keeps you occupied on a daily basis?
Music is the main focus between all the jobs I do. DJing, production, the weekly radio show, Deviation events, Deviation Label, and various special projects are all linked by that common thread.

When and how did you start with DJ’ing?
Like most people I started just by being in love with records as a teenager and DJing in my bedroom. My first gig was at a venue called the dome in North London when I was about 16. It just grew from there. I’ve been in clubs both an the dance floor and in the DJ booth since I can remember

When and why did you start Deviation?
Deviation started for two reasons, one because I had wanted to start a residency in London for many years and it was the right time. Second, it was a reaction rot what wasn’t happening - I felt it was not a great time for club night and I wanted to create a night that I would want to go to, and one where I could express all the sides of my musical taste. Also somewhere that could represent the things we love from the clubs we went to but with a clear focus on supporting new music, and new talent.

Deviation is bringing a lot of music styles and cultures together in it’s events. What do you think is that bridge that connects Deviation with Patta?
I think Patta and Deviation have a similar DNA in that respect. As brands we both appreciate different styles of music and culture and for us its natural to bring them together in one place, whether expressed in a club night or through this clothing and footwear collaboration.

What was the first record you bought?

Probably a pop 7” like Michael or Madonna. I used to be allowed 50p per week to buy a 7” single. I found loads of them the other day. I was probably 6 or 7 years old.

Which music artists are you currently listening to and would you recommend others?
Too many to think of right now. Off the top of my head today I have so far listened to King Krule, Kelela, Zomby, Frank, Arca, BadBadnotgood, Octavian, Sampha, Smerz, Cas, and a stack of US hip hop and house music too.

What is your best power piece at the moment?
Clothing: A very warm leather puffa jacket that basically feels like I am walking around in bed. Winter in London and Amsterdam is no Joke.
Collectiors piece: Just got a 7” sent to me signed by HOV of the Bam Single. They pressed only 44. (What a show off) Yeah but for real... thats the latest collectors item.

What is your favourite travel destination?
Amsterdam (New York and Tokyo up there too...)

JUDAH

Who are you, and where are you from?
Judah, I am a Londoner, father, brother and friend a jack of all trades a master of some.

What keeps you occupied on a daily basis?
My job as a tailor, role as a father and occasional councillor.

Why do you think Deviation was necessary in todays musical landscape?

Myself and Benji are both club kids firstly. We draw the same influences and reference points. We met in a club.

Deviation is necessary as it began at a time when London was going through a down turn in clubland. We have managed for 10 years to be that filter of what’s good from the past and what is relevant today. Our mission is to give the best experience at our night from visuals to sound and music.

What are the future plans for Deviation?
The future plan is to continue be a platform for new artist/producers. Take the brand on the road doing more international jams.

How did this project with Patta and Converse came about?
The project came about in a very natural way, we have always respected each other and it’s a truly genuine love.

One thing myself and Gee spoke about was how we have grown and to a certain point are contradictions as in we like the Highlow aesthetic in taste and how we have our feet in both worlds.

Before you know we were discussing fabrics and details.

Which music artists are you currently listening to and would you recommend others?
At the moment I float in and out of new and old music. Duval Timothy, SiR,loski, Skrapz, king Krule and Bill Evans. All of these are weather related...dark!!

What is your best power piece at the moment?
My Peacoat from Margret Howell, it’s been with me for 5yrs and still does the job.

What is your favourite graphic at the moment and why?

My favourite photography is a book I have called Ethiopian Highlands by Lizy Manola, it captures Orthodox Christianity.

What is your favourite travel destination?
Japan.
