It has been a few months since the NYU Masterclass video with professor Bob Power and Pharrell Williams went viral. In the video with selected students from the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Pharrell was clearly stunned and blown away by one particular student and her demo. The track was "Alaska" by Maggie Rogers, which she has released in the meantime. Now the song has received an official video treatment directed by Zia Anger. Watch Maggie and her friends dance through the fields of Maryland.

The Amsterdam-based artist Sofie Winterson was one of the participants in the first term of the Red Bull Music Academy Montreal. We had a little chat with her about who she is and what her experiences where at the Academy.

Who are you, and where are you from?
I am Sofie Winterson born on the peninsula Marken, living in Amsterdam.

What keeps you occupied on a daily basis?
Writing, performing and recording music, and learning those who want to learn how to sing, how to sing.

What were your expectations when you applied for the RBMA?
I heard so many good stories but at the same time didn't really know what to expect. I heard you learn the most from your fellow participants, but nobody told me too much about it.

What was the first impression you got when you entered the RBMA?
It was all super impressive. Meeting those 35 participants, seeing the 10 studios, meeting the studio team, listening to each others music. The level is so high!

What is your best memory from the two weeks in Montreal?

Hard to pick one, but jamming with Theo Parrish is definitely one of them!

What is your favourite visual at the moment and why?
The Portugese writer and Poet Fernando Pessoa, he is a writer, but it is visual to me :)

Which music artists are you currently listening to and would you recommend others?
At the academy I met Marie Davidson, she just released an LP. She is super talented. You can listen to one of the tracks, Naive to the bone, on Pitchfork, I love this track!

What is your favourite travel destination?
I want to go back to Montreal now and really see the city cause I had no time for that this time!

    Dear friends,

it saddens us that the community has lost a dear friend, a brother, a son, a father. Our prayers go out to Djordy's family and loved ones. In his honor and remembrance, Bitterzoet (Spuistraat 2) will provide a moment to say goodbye for everybody who holds Djordy near and dear. The doors will be open on Monday October 17 from 19:00. Given the sensitive circumstances surrounding Djordy's passing, it would be highly appreciated if visitors respect the love and positivity and offer others the opportunity to say goodbye as well. For those wishing to leave flowers, you are more than welcome to bring along a white rose for Djordy. If you wish to sign the digital book of condolence and light a candle please visit

This year Red Bull Music Academy alighted in the big, but idyllic city of Montreal for the 18th edition RBMA, located in the Phi center, Old town. The cultural center houses exhibitions, film, technology and a lot more. With help from local creative directors and designers, RBMA rebuild and -designed the complete interior with 10 home studios, a lecture hall, and a restaurant. When you enter the building, you directly step into a creative space that brings you back to Montreal in the 70’s.

Every year the Red Bull Music Academy takes place in a different city with participants from all over the world, giving them a chance to explore their musicality throughout lectures and access to professional studios. This year, the participants have access to 10 home studios and 1 live studio no less, which are all accessible 24 hours a day with facilities from analog drumcomputers and pianos, to live instruments. Between the lectures from artists such as pioneer DJ Robert Ouimet, old RBMA participant and South Africa’s house hero Black Coffee, 92-year-old and the third man to helm the Sun Ra Arkestra Marshall Allen and many more, they jump in the studio to put all the information and inspiration to work. With 70 participants and 35 in the first term from 38 different countries you understand that the Phi center quickly turned in a flourishing mixture of music.

After 2 weeks of living and creating together, the group of participants turned into a tight group, it almost felt like you entered an intense school camp where it doesn't matter where you're from or who you are. During the closing showcases where the participants played the songs they've created over the 2 weeks, Just Blaze, who was an RBMA mentor, turned the lecture hall into a serious house party. The first term came to an end, and you could feel a sort of relief but also sadness in the air. Friendships where made, collaborations started, and the participants went home into a creative future. The 1st term of the Red Bull Music Academy was yet again a success and we want to thank Red Bull Netherlands for inviting us and giving us the chance to experience the academy up close.
